Job Interview Tips [Jul. 24th, 2008|05:42 pm]

funnygurusdca
Several of my LJ friends are trying to get new jobs.

Here are some ideas to assist you in the process, if you are too ...

• Don't bring your Mom along
• Leave your plastic rain-hat at home
• Don't wear a necklance with a "razor blade" charm on it
• Good references do not include parole officers or former cellmates
• Large, dangling ear rings should not be worn (especially by you guys)

after the storm [Jul. 24th, 2008|01:31 pm]

flaquita
it took for-fucking-ever for the storm to first, reach land and then, reach me. it was well past 7 last night when it really got cranking. lost internet and cable, but miraculously, kept electricity the entire time.

of course, this didn't stop me from catching two big pails of rainwater from the roof runoff, in case...and i also ingeniously brewed a bigass pot of coffee and saved it in the refrigerator for the morning, por si acaso.

shingles kept slamming into the french doors all night, making me shriek each time. water crept in under the doorways, so i plugged it up with towels (and sandbags).

it finally all passed about 10 am. school is out until monday...i just hope they don't make us make up that time.

i'm posting this from a mcdonald's in pharr b/c it has wireless access...how ghetto.

i also dragged out my analog tv this morning and hooked up the bunny ears to get some sort of news...i am so resourceful.

in all, we came out pretty well. i know other parts of the valley aren't as lucky. so, i feel very grateful for what we have.

things i'm doing with my life in no particular order [Jul. 24th, 2008|10:19 am]

ncomplex
1) reading and thinking about table-top role-playing games
2) sipping cheap beer that i don't buy, on occasion
3) watching music videos when i can find them
4) watching video games that i don't own (for consoles that i don't own) at a friend's house (or at work)
5) building strategies to teach executives and developers who work for the government, large financial institutions, and companies that make billions of dollars how to reduce risk to their software before or as they build it - thus saving them millions of dollars - without ever seeing a dime
6) reading poetry my friend wrote on his typewriter
7) listening to a real guitar that isn't connected to a console (although i guess i do that, too)
8) talking about table-top role-playing games
9) discussing the meaning of life
10) reminiscing about "the good old days" or lost love
11) news/events around video games and movies, how a certain movie or theme relates to other movies or themes or the meaning of life
12) playing table-top role-playing games
13) wanting so badly to write, play chess, smoke cigarettes, and do drugs all day long, everyday

numbers 1-4,6-12 make me look like a teenager and number 13 makes me sound like i want to be a burnout, but it's too late for either of these things to happen now. i'll have to work on number 5

Meanwhile, on the campaign trail ... [Jul. 23rd, 2008|12:02 pm]

funnygurusdca
It wasn’t a television blackout of John McCain; it was worse: split-screen contrasts that at times made it seem as if Barack Obama was on a state visit while back home his opponent chafed at the perks and privileges of an incumbent commander in chief.

On Tuesday, Mr. McCain held a town hall-style meeting in Rochester, N.H.

In the shadow of the ancient Temple of Hercules in Amman, Jordan, Mr. Obama solemnly described his vision for peace in the region while standing at a lectern, the Middle East sprawling out behind him.

All three cable news networks carried Mr. Obama’s news conference live and in full. They showed only parts of Mr. McCain’s forum and focused mostly on his reaction to Mr. Obama’s statements.

Even Fox News broke away from Mr. McCain midevent to cover the rescue of a bear cub wounded in a California fire and nicknamed Lil’ Smokey.

On Monday, while Obama was shown striding across military tarmacs and inspecting troops standing at attention, McCain was seen being driven around in a golf cart by former President George Bush in the resort town of Kennebunkport, Maine. Later, the two men spoke to reporters side by side at a waterfront, and they looked more like fellow members of a Past Presidents’ Club than a party elder passing the torch to his political heir.

Birthday Greetings! [Jul. 23rd, 2008|10:30 am]

Don Imus turns 68 today.

Most people only know him from his stupid and insensitive remarks about the Rutgers Women's Basketball team last year, but he has been a singularly unique talent in radio since the late 1960s.

When it comes to being a broadcaster, he is without peer. He's seen it all and done it all (on and off the air) and he's lived to tell the tale.

Controversial? Sure.

Rough around the edges? Of course.

At one of his first radio jobs in California, he was fired for conducting an "Eldridge Cleaver Look-Alike Contest"!

One time he posed as an officer in the Army National Guard and telephoned a local McDonald's to order up 1,200 hamburgers to go - as lunch, he claimed, for troops who were conducting maneuvers in the area.

Love him or hate him, Don Imus has kept people talking about his radio antics for 40 years - and, he's kept 'em listening, too!

Happy Birthday, I-Man and may you have many happy returns of the day!

Hello, Dolly! [Jul. 23rd, 2008|09:13 am]

funnygurusdca
I lived in Corpus Christi Texas from early 1993 to early 1994.

One of the many things I don't miss about the place, is the weather. Ungodly hot and humid - worse than DC ever was!

And, who could forget the cockroaches?!? (or whatever the hell they were called)

These creatures were easily the size of my thumb -- and they could fly! They were so big, the FAA required that numbers be painted on them, so the air traffic controllers could manage and direct them more efficiently.

Maybe I wasn't there long enough to learn to fully appreciate the place, but I just couldn't get used to it. Until I got to Corpus Christi, who knew that there were supermarkets called HEB and that you could eat until you just couldn't anymore, at a place called Luby's Cafeteria?!?

Anyway, back to the weather, judging from the live shots on the cable news channels today, it looks like they're in for one helluva pounding today, from Hurricane Dolly.

anchors away... [Jul. 23rd, 2008|10:41 am]

flaquita
geezus, this frickin' storm is a big, fat, turgid blob. it was sposed to already be here by now, but it hasn't even crossed the shore yet at SPI and brownsville.

in case you care, i live on the border of edinburg-mcallen, which is one county over, but clearly in the line of action. it's just been raining some, but nothing major yet. we'll proly get more action later today. whee.

local tv reporters, unfortunately, are woefully unprepared for live reports from the field. some of them are dressed in their hideous yellow wal-mart plastic slickers and matching rain pants, getting blown around.

and some of them are just absolutely freaked out and unable to do live stand-ups, or blow-aways, without stupid references to the churning waves and palm trees blowing.
(in sofla, local tv used wobbling street signs as a barometer of el viento)

the best part is watching the poor cameramen wiping of the lens in vain. i don't think i've ever seen that before.

anyway, just thought i'd update a bit as there is little else to do....

**edit** oh, and the headline is a play on words..anchors aweigh....**

the word is not good [Jul. 22nd, 2008|09:39 pm]

so now, they're saying this damned storm is going to hit at the mouth of the rio grande.

that means people in brownsville and mission and along the river could be fucked.

this has some potentially katrina-like effects...so, you heard it here first.

but...maybe we'll get lucky.

the calm before the storm [Jul. 22nd, 2008|06:35 pm]

luciferian
Iowa was a good time. Very relaxing. mostly spent with old friends and family. My sisters child in 3 and its a lot of fun to be a crazy uncle.

quite interestingly I raninto several old mentors and teachers when I wasiniowa, who were very willing to discuss ideas and compare notes about my formative years.

My bus back from iowa was oversold, and I was left standing on the curb at 2:00am. The next bus wouldnt have gotten me back to Detroit in time for the birthday barbeque in my honor.

My old friend Herb just happened to be driving by and asked if i needed a ride home. He had a few days off so we left immediately and he drove the whole 8 hours.
The barbeque was great, I've gotten a lot of good stuff.

Officially over the hill now. I'm very much feeling a new beginning going into 31.

Now tomorrow we're leaving for VA Beach and the most signifigant kung fu event that has happened since the death of moy yat.

should be back next week. then off to san francisco for a week. then back briefly before more NYC adventures.
